For six months in 1994 I backpacked alone through Asia where I explored foreign lands, different people and diverse cultures from Northern Taiwan to Southern Australia. My itinerary was planned around ancient and modern holy sites. I saw the lives of coed monks in a Taoist Monastery, the work of silvery reliquary polishers in a Malaysian Hindu temple, and the pride of the Moslem faith healer outside Jakarta.
As I was exposed to these temples, mosques, churches, sanctuaries and monasteries, I learned more about Asian belief systems as expressed through the visual arts. I am still intrigued and inspired by this journey. These grass paintings are a study in simplicity and have been described by others as “Zen-like”.
